Setting for Amazon beef cattle

Cattle raising occupies around 220 million hectares, 70 million of these hectares are in the Amazon states. One of the main economic activities in Brazil, cattle raising expansion has been limited by strict policies in order to combat deforestation and also from the competition with soybeans and other crops.

Taking this limitation into account the issue is : How can we accelerate the changes in cattle raising, improving the value of production and at the same time reducing their environmental impacts? What are the main difficulties and the setbacks of this acceleration?

To answer these and many other questions, Fabiano Alvim a professor at  Veterinary School, and Britaldo Soares-Filho from Remote Sensing Center of the Geosciences Institute of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) produced with some researchers an interactive website "Scenarios for the Amazon Beef Cattle".  The website show a perspective of beef cattle in Brazil, specially in the Amazon along with development options for this regard. The study, coordinated by UFMG, had the support of CLUA (Climate and Land Use Alliance) and Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
