Lapig and Embrapa partner on field research on pasture

The Laboratory of Image Processing and Geoprocessing (Lapig) of the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), in partnership with the Brazilian Agricultural Research Company (Embrapa), conducted two research fields in nine Brazilian states to collect pasture data.

The objective of both fields was to qualify the forage and to validate the accuracy analysis of the algorithms of the satellite images already mapped by Lapig. For this, the localities were chosen from the compilation of the pasture area, cattle existence and pasture degradation situation.

The first field was carried out between May 3 and 19, covering 4,717 km and covering the territories of the states of São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Goiás and Minas Gerais, with the partnership of Embrapa Meio Ambiente. In this first field the team was composed, on the part of Lapig, by the doctorate Sérgio Nogueira and the analysts of Embrapa Tadeu Lana and Sandro Marschhausen.

The second field between August 14 and 22 covered 3,650 km between the Federal District, Goiás, Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia. The team was composed by the researchers of Embrapa Cerrados, Edim Vieira and Heleno Bezerra and by the doctoral students of Lapig, Sérgio Nogueira and Claudinei dos Santos.

In both fields, land uses and land cover and different pasture quality indicators were identified, such as: soil exposure, presence of invasive plants, presence of termites, different levels of homogeneity and height. In the first field there was also the measurement of chlorophyll content and soil collection for further analysis of soil carbon stock.

In both fields, points were collected for the calibration and validation of the Lapig pasture map, obtaining an accuracy rate of 90%.

The information collected was also included in the database created by Embrapa, which will result in the temporary georeferencing mobile application available to Embrapa and partners of the Integrated Plow-Livestock-Forest Network (ILPF), but will be expanded in the future for free access.

Lapig is internationally recognized for mapping through satellite imagery, notably the Interactive Map tool, a platform with interoperability standards and free software that aggregates more than 8,000 layers of georeferenced data from several Brazilian entities. Want to know more? Go to:<>.
